Leaky Feeder:
Continuous communication in mines and tunnels

The benchmark underground‑mining communication system for over 50 years. At UQOMM, we design, integrate, and maintain these systems for the most demanding operations worldwide.

UQOMM

What is Leaky Feeder and why it is considered the benchmark technology

Leaky Feeder—also referred to as low‑frequency radiating cable—is a coaxial medium engineered with precisely controlled openings in its outer conductor. These openings function as distributed antenna elements that emit RF signals uniformly along the cable. This enables continuous coverage over kilometers of underground galleries, including curves, elevation changes, and complex junctions.

In contrast to conventional antennas that provide coverage from fixed points, Leaky Feeder transforms the entire cable route into a continuous communication corridor. This ensures consistent signal quality from the surface to the deepest production areas, eliminating dead zones and minimizing potential failure points.

Originally developed for mining in the 1960s, Leaky Feeder has proven its reliability for more than five decades in real‑world underground operations. At UQOMM, we design, integrate, maintain, and tailor these systems to each site’s architecture, supported by over thirty years of global experience.

How the Leaky Feeder system works

A complete Leaky Feeder system is composed of four main elements:

Technology

Frequency and standards compatibility

Leaky Feeder operates in frequency bands between 70 MHz and 900 MHz, making it compatible with the main professional communication standards:

Standard Frequency band Typical application Compatible with LF
TETRA 380–400 MHz / 410–430 MHz Trunked radio for emergency and mining Native
DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) 136–174 MHz / 400–512 MHz Professional digital radio Native
Analog VHF/UHF VHF 136 a 174 MHz
UHF 400 a 512 MHz
Legacy portable radios Native
P25 (APCO-25) 136-939 MHz North American emergency standard With adapter
LTE (data) 700–900 MHz Broadband for data/automation Dual configuration

Technologies

Leaky Feeder

in underground mining

Underground mining is the environment for which Leaky Feeder was originally conceived and where it reaches its full potential. Its ability to expand alongside the advancing production front, together with its compatibility with all mining radio systems, makes it the backbone of any responsible underground operation.

  • Voice coverage from the surface to the deepest active face
  • Integration with personnel tracking and evacuation systems
  • Compatibility with TETRA standards required by regulations such as Chile’s DS‑132
  • Dynamic scalability: it extends as the mine advances

Leaky Feeder

in vehicular tunnels

In vehicular tunnels, Leaky Feeder is the reference solution for emergency radio services: firefighters, police, and civil protection require guaranteed coverage throughout the entire length of the tunnel. It is generally installed in combination with a DAS system that also extends public mobile telephony.

  • Compliance with road‑safety regulations for tunnels longer than 500 m
  • Emergency radio coverage without dead zones along the entire tunnel
  • Robust design for environments with exhaust gases and high humidity

Leaky Feeder

in underground metro systems

Underground metro systems rely on Leaky Feeder to maintain uninterrupted RF coverage along tunnels, enabling smooth signal transitions as trains move between cable segments. In stations, it is complemented by DAS platforms to deliver comprehensive multiband coverage.

  • Support for GSM‑R and TETRA railway communication standards
  • End‑to‑end coverage continuity during high‑speed train travel
  • Integration with CBTC (Communications‑Based Train Control)

FAQ

Leaky Feeder, or radiating cable, is a coaxial cable with controlled slots in its shielding that distribute radio signals continuously along its entire length. It is installed throughout the mine’s galleries and acts as an extended antenna that eliminates coverage gaps. Unlike conventional antennas, which transmit from a fixed point, Leaky Feeder provides uniform coverage from the mine entrance to the deepest working faces. It is the reference technology for mining communications due to its proven reliability for more than 50 years.

A Leaky Feeder system has no practical length limit. Repeater amplifiers, installed approximately every 350 to 500 meters, regenerate the signal and allow coverage to be extended throughout the entire operation. We have deployed systems exceeding 22 kilometers within a single mine. The final length depends on the type of cable, the operating frequency, and the minimum signal level required. As the mine expands, we extend the network by adding new cable sections and amplifiers.

Yes. Leaky Feeder is compatible with multiple radio standards, including TETRA, DMR, and analog VHF/UHF. We analyze the frequency band and the standard used in each operation to design a fully compatible solution. In most projects, we reuse existing terminals, reducing costs and accelerating deployment.

A physical break affects only the section after the failure point. Our monitoring systems automatically detect the loss of signal, trigger an alarm, and provide an approximate location of the incident. The repair follows a standard procedure that the mine’s maintenance team can carry out, allowing service to be restored in very short time.

They are not mutually exclusive technologies; they complement each other. Leaky Feeder provides continuous coverage for voice communications and emergency radio, while Wi‑Fi delivers data connectivity for automation, video surveillance, and telemetry.  We design hybrid architectures in which each technology fulfills the role where it delivers the best performance, resulting in a more robust communications infrastructure that is fully prepared for the growth of the operation.

The cost depends on the length of the galleries, the radio standard required, the installation conditions, and the integration with other systems. Each project is based on a custom engineering design, so we conduct a technical assessment beforehand and deliver a detailed budget.  A properly engineered communications infrastructure reduces operational risk, improves service continuity, and facilitates regulatory compliance throughout the entire life cycle of the operation.
